Most people think they've handled dryer maintenance the moment they empty the lint trap before a load. That habit matters, but it only catches a fraction of what a dryer actually sheds — plenty of lint slips past the trap and travels down the exhaust duct, where it settles at bends, joints, and the vent cap outside. Left alone, that buildup is one of the more common starting points for house fires that begin in a laundry room, and long before it gets that serious, it quietly doubles how long every load takes to dry. What the lint trap doesn't catch

Every dryer sheds lint faster than the trap can fully keep up with, and what gets past it doesn't just vanish — it travels through the exhaust duct behind the machine and settles wherever the airflow slows down. That's usually at a bend in the ductwork, at the seam where two sections join, or right at the vent cap outside, where the moving air has nowhere left to go but out a narrow flap. Over months of laundry, that scattered buildup adds up to a real blockage, even in a house where someone empties the trap before every single load.

Why it's worth the half hour

A blocked vent forces a dryer to work harder for a worse result. Hot, damp air that should be venting outside backs up into the drum instead, so clothes come out damp after a normal cycle and the machine runs longer and hotter to compensate — a change that shows up directly on the energy bill and shortens the life of the heating element. Keep the run to the outside as short and straight as the room allows; every extra bend is another spot for lint to settle, and a duct that has to travel far or turn several times to reach an exterior wall needs cleaning more often no matter how careful you are. At the joints, seal with foil tape rather than screws, since screw tips poke into the airflow and catch lint the way a burr catches a sweater.

Twice a year is the right baseline for a typical household — pair it with another seasonal chore so it's easy to remember. Bump that up if you're doing laundry for a large family, drying pet bedding regularly, or your vent run is unusually long or has more than a couple of bends.
